Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption focuses on Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly business owner who abhors Christmas and all measures of sentimentality. But that all starts to change when he is plagued by ghosts and his own memories on Christmas Eve. Theatre Calgary’s run of A Christmas Carol includes a special landmark this year: lead actor Stephen Hair is taking on the role of Scrooge for the 25th time.

Note: There are no performances on December 3, 4, 5, 10, 12 and 17.

This adaptation on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has a powerful life of its own thanks to French master composer Charles Gounod. This fall, it is brought to life by Calgary Opera with assistance from the Alberta Ballet. If you haven’t seen the titular star-crossed lovers at the opera before, you need to see this show.

The CORE’s third annual tree decorating event helps to support The Magic of Christmas, a charity that delivers gifts on Christmas Eve with the help of Calgary Transit. Festivities include Christmas tree lighting, live entertainment, photos with Santa and fireworks. Cash and unwrapped gift donations will be accepted for The Magic of Christmas.

Over 100 adult athletes race down WinSport’s luge at speeds exceeding 130 kilometres per hour for glory and prizes at the third stop on the luge world cup. Friday also includes free hot chocolate and popcorn for the first 150 in attendance while Saturday boasts Christmas-themed children’s activities and live music by Matt Blais.
